Music at the Red Door enriches our neighborhood with a broad range of artistic offerings. Through a year-round season of concerts in the acoustically and visually stunning St. John’s Episcopal Church in West Hartford, Music at the Red Door employs the power of music and fellowship to enrich the culture of Greater Hartford. These initiatives serve to build bridges between our parish and the wider community.
Our concerts are free and open to all. We primarily rely on freewill donations as well as generous grants from local and state organizations.
A bit of history…
Our expanded series of musical offerings began in September 2011. The name of the series makes reference to our front doors, whose color traditionally symbolizes welcome and sanctuary. The series has established St. John’s as a destination for those seeking musical refreshment and excellence, drawing on the existing strengths of our choir, guest artists, architecture, organ, location, and Anglican heritage.
Music at the Red Door hosts eclectic concerts that include choral music, chamber music, jazz, half-hour organ concerts featuring local artists, and Choral Evensongs. Local legends like Nat Reeves, Leonid Sigal, and Ed Fast have performed here.
In addition to our concerts, Red Door expands our reach into the community through strategic partnerships. The New World Trio is currently our Ensemble in Residence. We also host an annual summer children’s music camp for third, fourth, and fifth grade children, under the leadership of Calida Jones, founder of the El Sistema program BRAVO Waterbury. This weeklong camp primarily serves our neighbors in Asylum Hill and the West End.
We hope to see you at the Red Door often! Be sure to check out our events and learn how you can help.
